There's Something Intoxicating About Art

by
Melisa J. Verch

There is something intoxicating about spending an afternoon in an art museum.

Being surrounded by the paintings and sculptures both relaxes me and makes my heart race.  You've see the paintings in books but when they are 3 feet in front of you they become absolutely electric.  It's easy to understand why classic art has been so admired throughout history.  When I've been fortunate enough to view an original Monet, it has given me goosebumps.

Have you ever thought of rugs as art?  Talented artists such as Andy Warhol, Kim Parker and Bob Timberlake have had their work incorporated into floor coverings.

They Made It With WHAT?!

Unconventional materials are being used by rug designers to create imaginative pieces.  For them, it is all about the use of color and texture.  Strips of leather are tied into a dimensional shag.  Materials such as silk or jersey are being woven into richly colored pieces.  Bamboo is not a newcomer to the market but it is being dyed and bound in wonderful hues.

All The Rage

Outdoor rugs are the hottest thing.  Whether you choose a natural or man made material be aware of the recommended cleaning method as well as resistance to mold and mildew.  UV protection is also a must.

Friezé (think shag carpeting), is coming on strong in rugs and carpet.  With different lengths and textures in the fibers, you will find this style to be quite appealing instead of feeling dated.  The great colors available make it a wonderful choice for a teen's room.

Graphic designs in a rug will bring a contemporary feel to your room.  Look for bold stripes, stacking blocks and Picasso inspired designs in colors ranging from rich to muted.  Punch up a Pottery Barn style room with a bold rug, you will love the results.

Lots Of Possibilities

Don't limit yourself to what you see in the "big box" stores.  Many online stores offer a wider range of styles and some fabulous pricing.  A bonus to shopping online is that shipping is free from many of the vendors.

When you consider rugs as art, it will open your eyes to exciting decorating themes.  A well-chosen rug will set the flavor for a whole room and can bring that "Oh my!" reaction that is so satisfying.

Consider the possibilities and have a wonderful week!
