Decorating A New Home

Decorating a new home?  It can be a wonderfully exciting and yet overwhelming experience.  The emotional experience of the purchase of a new home can leave you mentally exhausted.  Here is a step by step guide to help you fill your home beautifully and have a great time doing it!

My number one tip is to get a sense of your own decorating style before you make any decisions.  Take your decorating magazines and cut out pictures that appeal to you.

Don’t try to figure out WHY they appeal to you, just let your heart have free rein as to what it likes.

Hallway

Neutral colors and natural materials create a polished entryway. A well thought out entrance sets the mood for the rest of the home.

If you can’t find enough pictures, browse the internet.  Right click on any picture and choose "Save Picture As" and save them all in one file.  This is your decorating idea file and it will soon reveal what you like.  Once you’ve assembled all your pictures, look through them and look for common themes.  Maybe a certain color reoccurs.  Maybe a certain pattern or style.  It will soon become apparent what makes your heart sing.

Your Decorating
Budget And Color Choice

The second step is to plan your decorating budget. You must account for the large items first.  Do the children need a new bedroom furniture?  Is a couch for the den a must have?  Prioritize what you must purchase.  If the home is not new, but new to you, then you may have to buy floor coverings or appliances.  Leave some budget room, though, for art and accessories.

The third step is to choose your color scheme for decorating your new home.  My favorite method is to take a piece of fabric or artwork and use that as my palette.  Maybe you’ve taken a recent trip to an art gallery and found a painting which was stunning. You don’t actually have to use that particular artwork in your home, you can just use it to define your color palette in your own mind.

The Finishing Touches

After your large purchases, think of layering in the rest of your decorating choices.  The important thing is that the layering can be an extended process.  Rugs, window treatments, artwork and accessories don’t have to be added within 2 weeks of your move-in date.

Take your time to enjoy what you are doing and to wait for the right additions.  It is better to have a bare wall than to have a average picture that just happened to have the right colors.  Wait until your find a picture you love. It makes decorating more of a treasure hunt.  The right items become your trophies which will bring you joy for years to come.

Consider something special for your entry.  There is plenty of truth in the old saying of that "You never get a second chance to make a great first impression."  How do you want your home to feel to a first time visitor?  Greet them with something stunning and unique when they cross your threshold.  You don’t have to overwhelm them, but surely have something that will catch their eye.  It will say plenty about your style.

Your ideas will sometimes come from the most unusual places.  The key is to give it time and let your heart make the selections.  Understand your own tastes, set your budget priorities, choose your palette and you’ll create a home you love.  Don’t let the rush of "getting through it" spoil the sheer joy of decorating a new home.
