It's Not What You Spend, It's What You Urn
(sorry, I just couldn't resist)
This is the time of the year I hit the garden shops to look
for great urns on sale. You may find that even though the
prices are great, the decorative motifs or colors don't
match. Buy them anyway and paint them the same to
give them unity. Experiment with faux finish spray paints
to create a look that you love. Most of the urns have an
old world feel but you can change them to fit your decor.
Think ahead and choose colors that you will use in your
fall decorating.
The urns can also be used as the base of a coffee or side
table. Place a piece of wood or glass on top to create an
easy and inexpensive piece of furniture. If you use a glass
top make sure the inside of the vase is visually appealing.
Filling it with sand and then adding lots of colored glass
stones ( available in the floral or craft departments) on
top would be unique but easy to do.
The Inside Scoop On Outdoor Furniture
While in the garden department check out the furniture for
outdoor pieces that can work inside. Wood or iron chairs
and loveseats can be softened with cushions. I use a garden
bench in my entrance hall and keep it piled with colorful
pillows that I change with the season. I love being greeted
by all the colors and textures when I come into my home.
The other "outdoor" piece in my entrance hall is a wicker
table. They can be bought very inexpensively this time of
year. I give mine a new look on a regular basis with paint.
Working with the pattern of the wicker I have painted the
middle of the tabletop dark green and the border eggplant.
It looks far more expensive than the $12 I paid for it.
Wrapping It Up
Wonderfully large plush towels make a luxurious item for the
the bathroom. Buy high quality beach towels in your favorite
colors and put them in the bathroom. Take advantage of the
clearance sales and stock up this month. The men in the
family will love having oversized towels to use when they
step out of the shower. They are also great for kids at camp
or college where modesty is a factor as they go to and from
the shower.
Use your creativity and eye for bargains to stretch your
decorating budget so that when you see something you really
want for your home you will have the money to splurge. Great
design comes more from being able to pull it all together than
from how much you have spent on each piece.
