I spent hours recently at Homerama in Charlotte. This yearly event showcases the newest trends in home design.

The builders create a street of spectacularly built and decorated homes. All the homes were over 10,000 square feet and were located on prime lake-front property.
I want to share with you some of the features repeated throughout the tour which you can incorporate into your own decorating plans.
What I really noticed was that there were so many elements which could be used in even the most modest of homes - without having to spend a great deal of money.

Moldings
Moldings and baseboards are important in creating the feeling of quality. Interest was created by painting them a deeper or lighter shade of the wall color in a semi gloss paint.
Moldings did not stay the same color throughout the house. This may not work if you have a small home and need to keep consistency throughout to enlarge the space but a large home can carry it off.
Natural materials such as granite, wood and leather are very important.
Ornate Room Typical Of These Showings
Walls and Ceilings
Faux finished walls are still popular. Metallic paint brushed on in random strokes looked great in bathrooms. Wallpaper was also used in bathrooms, featuring textures and graphic designs.
Lighting was a focal point in many spaces. High ceilings looked elegant with pendant lights and unusual chandeliers. Lamps in unusual shapes and textures create an eye catching piece on a table. Hallways were lit with wall mounted fixtures that doubled as art pieces.
Windows and Bedding
Woven wooden shades were used for privacy instead of the typical blinds. They looked great with the woodsy setting of the homes. Some were enhanced with a valance of fabric.
Beds were layered with high-count sheets, comforters, throws and lots of pillows. Dust ruffles puddle or break on the floor the same as window panels. The effect is luxurious.
You and I may never live in a 13,000 square foot home but we can use it for inspiration in decorating our own space. I encourage you to go on a home tour and take lots of pictures for your idea folder. It is a great way to learn and it will inspire you tremendously.
